Babes Ride Out 5

The Great Escape | A Weekend on the Triumph Scrambler

REVIEWS, SponsorsAshmore Ellis

I fell for the Triumph Scrambler on back roads along the Delaware River this summer. It was the lightest street bike I had ridden and taking it on off road detours with a "hey, let's go see where that road leads to" mentality was the theme of the day. I loved it so much I borrowed one for Babes Ride Out 5. I didn't know it then, but this bike was the catalyst for my great escape...

I won't bore you with the details that go into producing Babes Ride Out, but it's a lot of work. Often, Anya and myself do not get the chance to leave the property so when we do, we are incredibly grateful. When I was tossed the keys to a brand new Triumph Scrambler with a full tank of gas, I immediately grabbed my helmet, 1 friend, and left the campsite in my dust. As the event space distanced itself in my mirrors, I felt an overwhelming sense of calmness and an increasing sense of exhilaration.

With wide handlebars, low seat height, and incredible suspension, I felt in control and the bike seemed more predictable. This sort of smoothness and the ride by wire system (enhances throttle response for even more control and response) gave me more confidence to pick up my speed. I headed to the Joshua Tree National Park entrance to see how it would handle on the wide twisting roads.

Flying through the park on the Scrambler felt like a baptism of sorts with all the worry, anxiety, and tiredness washing out of me the moment I took the first corner. Floating through the pristine desert landscape with such ease almost felt like I was cheating. Time seemed to go by way too fast as I neared the exit of the park. With a renewed sense of energy and excitement from the ride, I headed back to camp.

Once off the bike and back to work I realized just how badly I needed that time to myself. The Triumph Scrambler was my escape, a time to clear my head and appreciate the most beautiful landscape on one of the most fun machines I have ever ridden. I was able to create lasting memory with a friend, completely de-stress, and truly connect myself to nature and machine.

EventsAnya Violet

Our minds are still reeling from the weekend. Sometimes it's hard to step back and wrap our heads around everything that went on at Babes Ride Out 5. Besides the amazing attendees that come from around the world, it's our incredible sponsors who help us make this event truly unique. Triumph Motorcycles

There are so many reasons why we are thankful to have Triumph Motorcycles as a part of our event. Reason #1 is real simple, they make the best and most versatile motorcycles on the market that are perfect for weekend adventures, commuting, and beyond. They had their new fleet of Bonneville and Street series bikes on display throughout the weekend. Saturdays moto games were not to be missed as the solum and slow races left 1 woman standing! We were lucky enough to get to rip the Street Scrambler and Thruxton R through the desert so stay tuned for the full reviews on those amazing machines. If you liked what you saw at the Triumph booth get down to a dealership near you and test ride your favorite model.

These ladies came to PRINT! After the dust settled, the Progressive Dark Room printed 3,400+ photos from the attendees of Babes Ride Out 5 who used the tag #ProgressiveDarkRoom. Jetboil Cooking System | A Necessity for Motorcyclists Who Ride, Camp, and Repeat

Sponsors, DIY TipsAshmore Ellis

Motorcycle camping for days at a time, riding from national park to national park is one of our absolute favorite things to do.  Traveling on a bike means you are limited to what can fit on your moto, and space is reserved for the essentials. One of our all time favorite and most used items is a Jetboil. These small camp stoves can boil water within a few seconds which makes dinner so much easier and a quick cup of coffee possible. A lot of us have dietary restrictions, some of us NEED that hot cup of coffee when we wake up, and since a lot of national parks do not allow fires, this unit is perfect if you need to heat up that gas station Chef Boyardee or that can of soup you picked up at the last gas stop.  In the spirit of wandering countless miles and always starting with a hot beverage and ending with a warm meal, we have partnered with Jetboil to gives away some of their MiniMo Cooking Systems at the Moto FAM raffle.

We've got some amazing food trucks heading to Babes Ride Out 5 but we know some of you are traveling multiple days or some of you rather make your own food at camp. Here are just a few roadside recipes make with a Jetboil that we LOVE! There are a ton of ways you can use this unit to make meals and beverages while motorcycling so get creative, test them out, and let us know you if have a good one you'd like to share.

Pizza In A Pot

From: Trail Cooking Website (www.trailcooking.com)
"Italian inspired couscous tossed with meat and cheese."
Sounds yummy to us!

Ingredients:

  • 2/3 cup of couscous
  • 1 Tbsp sun-dried tomatoes
  • 1 Tbsp diced dried bell peppers
  • 1 Tsp dried oregano
  • 1 Tsp dried basil
  • 1/4 Tsp dried garlic, powder or diced
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil (1 packet)
  • 4 oz shelf stable pre-sliced pepperoni slices (see notes)
  • 2 oz mozzarella cheese (see notes)

Directions:

  • Add 1 cup of water to your cooking system and bring to a boil
  • Turn off the stove and add in the dry ingredients, oil and pepperoni.  Stir well, put the lid on tightly and let sit for 10 minutes.
  • Dice the cheese, fold in and let sit for a minute.

Notes:

  • Shelf stable pepperoni is often sold next to the deli meats in grocery stores but doesn't need to be kept cold until opened.
  • For the mozzarella cheese, use 2 pieces of string cheese. It is fine to carry for a couple days, it will get soft but is edible.

Jetboil Mac & Cheese

Everyone needs a little comfort food - even on the trail. Here's a quick, light and easy way to enjoy your macaroni & cheese.

Ingredients: One box of Mac and Cheese

Directions:

  • For one serving, boil 2 cups of water and add 2 packages of noodles.
  • Keep an eye on the noodles and stir often so they don't stick, allowing them to simmer until soft.
  • Put your Jetboil lid on and drain some of the water (no all as you need some to make the sauce)
  • Add cheese packets and stir.  Mmmmmmm!

30 Second Hot Chocolate

When hot chocolate takes 30 seconds to make, you might start drinking a lot more of it. We won't hold it against you if you buy the packets of Swiss Miss or Carnation, but here's a good recipe if you're a diehard do-it-yourselfer.

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup cocoa
  • 1 1/3 cup instant nonfat dry milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons powdered non-dairy creamer
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Optional: instant coffee

Directions:

  • To one cup hot water, add 1/3 cup dry mix (about four to six heaping tablespoons) and stir well. Add a little instant coffee for mocha. Life is good.

Mmm S'mores Cocktail | Love at First Sip!

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tbsp cocoa
  • 3 Tbsp dry milk
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 oz chocolate liqueur (Kahlua or Amaretto)
  • 2 Tbsp mini marshmallows

Directions:

  • Add 1 cup hot water to the cocoa mix, stir in the liquor and top with marshmallows.
  • Note: A packet of hot cocoa mix can be substituted for the cocoa and milk powders.

S&S Cycle On Site Mechanic Coming to Babes Ride Out 5

DIY Tips, SponsorsAshmore Ellis

"We're pretty excited to partner with Babes Ride Out and support the growth of the women rider movement. BRO has grown from a grass roots collection of passionate riders to become the largest ladies only event of its kind. S&S Cycle will be on site to provide tech support and basic mechanical guidance. Look for our own Savannah Rose and her hardtail Sporty as well as a stocked up Sprinter van" - David Zemla , VP of Marketing at S&S Cycle

Knowing your bike is running in tip top shape is important when you are traveling hundreds of miles to get to Babes Ride Out 5. Even though we always strongly encourage ladies to have their bikes checked out before they hit the road, the inevitable happens. A tire looks a little too worn, you've burned more oil than you thought, your headlight goes out, tire pressure reduces, things shake loose, and all sorts of other things may get the better of you. We are so excited to announce that S&S Cycle will have a garage setup that will be on site in a little section just off Sunfair, the main road leading into Babes Ride Out. Babes Ride Out 5's Pioneertown Route Packs in the Fun (60 Miles Roundtrip)

Riding RoutesAshmore Ellis

Babes Ride Out is a true riding event which means when the sun comes up, grab a coffee, some breakfast at camp, and get outta there and explore some of the best riding in Southern California. We aren't joking when we say the camp clears out during the day. If you stay behind, you are blowing it! Stop by the Mojave Land Trust booth , pick up your Biltwell route map, and make sure to download these directions before you go.

This route hits some of our all time favorite places in Joshua Tree. If you rode like hell to get to the event or a newer rider and just want to cruise, this mellow ride is for you.

Pioneertown  (60 Miles)

  • 1 hour and 30 min round trip on your bike
  • Amazing little route that takes you through some winding roads with minimal stop lights
  • Pappy and Harriets is a must see, eve Paul McCartney played show on their small stage
  • Pappy and Harriets also has an insane lunch! Their mac and cheese is incredible.
  • Pioneertown is an old set created for Hollywood westerns. You'll be able to visit Sarah Tabbs at the Pioneertown General Store which is stoked with vintage and locally made items! Make sure to take advantage of the 10% discount she has for ALL ladies attending BRO.
  • Last time I checked, a few mini ponies were hanging at in Pioneertown (please take a photo with them and tag it #ProgressiveDarkRoom so we can see!)
  • La Copine.....google it. Best brunch you will ever have in your life and a small detour from this route
