Close Encounters of the Adorable Kind | Mojave Desert Land Trust's List of Critters You May See During Babes Ride Out 6

Locals, SponsorsAshmore Ellis

On long rides, sometimes it’s nice to stop and smell the roses…or spot the tortoise! During your time at Babes Ride Out 6, we hope you’ll keep an eye out for the awesome desert plants and animals that make this location so special. Here are some notable flora and fauna that is active during the month of October in Joshua Tree and beyond. Just remember to give critters their space, don’t feed them, and watch out for animals crossing the road!

Mojave Yucca An iconic desert plant and close relative of the Joshua tree, these spiky shrubs can be seen all around Joshua Tree, Yucca Valley, and in the southern portion of Mojave Trails.

Desert Holly It may only be October, but much like your local department store, the Mojave Desert is already getting in the Christmas spirit! You can spot these prickly clusters with red berries at Amboy Crater.

California Juniper These bushy trees can be found on desert slopes in Joshua Tree National Park. Keep your eyes – and nose! – open for beautiful blue berries and that refreshing juniper fragrance.

Pinyon Pine Harvested for timber and firewood over the centuries, the sweet pinyon wood fragrance invokes the image of pueblos and adobe homes. You can find these majestic, twisting trees throughout the desert on rocky, southern-facing slopes and mesas.

Honey Mesquite Known for its beautiful beans that sustained travelers in the frontier days, the mesquite is the most common shrub of the desert southwest. You can find honey mesquites and their pods in Big Morongo Canyon Preserve

Red-Tailed Hawk True to its name, the red-tailed hawk has a broad, rounded tail with a rich, russet hue. You can see these amazing aerial acrobats circling around in the sky throughout the desert, especially in north Mojave Trails.

Bighorn Sheep Mature male bighorn sheep have curled horns that can reach up to 33 inches, while juvenile and female horns never exceed a half-curl. These majestic creatures can be seen scrambling up mountain slopes during the day, especially in the morning when they feed, at the Whitewater Preserve.

Desert Tortoise With their domed shells and ambling gait, the California state reptile is one of the most recognizable species in the Mojave. October an active time of the year for the desert tortoise, so maybe you’ll get lucky and spot one among the shrubs. If you see a desert tortoise on the road, follow Joshua Tree National Park’s guide on when and how to move a desert tortoise.

Chuckwalla These plump, peaceful lizards are usually the size of your forearm and emerge in the morning to bask in the sun before hunting for food. Look for these regal reptiles at Amboy Crater amongst the lava rock.

Sphinx Moth The sphinx moths are among the largest flying insects in the desert and have fabulously flashy pink hind wings. You may confuse these beautiful bugs for hummingbirds when they are flapping around in the early evening throughout the desert lands.

Babes Ride Out Artist Series highlights the talented people in our community. Every artist donates their time and creativity to create a custom piece for the BRO6 Raffle. We are so happy to be able to support Moto F.A.M. through the proceeds of the raffle each year. Moto FAM raises funds for riders that have been hurt in a motorcycle related accident, or the family of a fallen rider. Thank you so much to Atwyld for contributing the military jacket for the Artist Series this year! Where are you from originally?
A little town north of Pittsburgh called Butler

Where do you live now?
A little college town further north of Pittsburgh called Slippery Rock

What first got you into art?
I’ve been into all things art since I was a little kid. My mom is a very creative person and my family is very creative and everyone has been very supportive in helping fuel my creative drive and hobbies.

How would you describe your style?
In one word "Versatile". I tend to favor neotraditional/abstract/modernist but I’m not afraid to step out of my comfort zone and try something new.

What inspires you? Have any artists in particular been an influence on you?
My fiancé and daughter inspire me most. They push me to put myself and my work out there and to never give up.
There are so many amazing artists out there pushing boundaries and dominating it’s hard to focus on just one. Each one brings their own style, uniqueness, and creativity to the table.

What is your favorite medium?
Acrylic would have to be my favorite. I’ve recently tried out alcohol markers, pen and colored pencils and I’m loving it.

When did you first hear about Babes Ride Out?
My fiancé. He’s a huge motorcycle enthusiast and said while on IG one day said check these ladies out they are badass

What is your connection to the motorcycle community?
I’m fairly new to the motorcycle community. I grew up in a classic car household, where it was always vintage cars, vintage/classic style, racing, building, and decorating. My fiancé gave me a big push into the community, so I traded my roll cage for the wind in my face and haven’t looked back.

Do you ride? If so, what do you ride?
I’m the operator and passenger of a 72 Sporty

If you were a motorcycle what kind would you be?
I’d be a soft tail bobber.

Have you ever been to Joshua Tree? What was your experience there?
I have not, but it’s on my bucket list.

What will you be contributing to this years raffle?
I will be painting an Atwyld jacket. And I am pumped!

Tell us about what inspired you to create it?
I’m going for more of a deeper meaning with my design. Something that shows strength and confidence, the action of leadership, and the individual’s solidarity within the community.

About Jenn Hallett

I’ve been painting professionally since I was about 20 years old, so a little over 14 years, though I’ve been painting and drawing for as far back as I can remember.

While I’ll paint pretty much anything, most of my paint work is on motorcycles and helmets.  My specialty would definitely be lettering and pinstriping, though I have been asked to do a lot of different styles over the years.  One of the things I truly love about my job is that every paint job I’m commissioned for is always different and it allows me to push myself artistically.

My inspiration comes from a lot of different places, but I’m especially inspired by multimedia pop art.  It’s something that has inspired a lot of my original art pieces, but with a lowbrow twist since that’s a style I’ve enjoyed painted for many years.  I call it moto-art because it often features people and vehicles in the motorcycle and/or car cultures. I remember hearing about Babes after the first Babes in Borrego and I was hooked after I got to attend my first Babes Ride Out in Joshua Tree a few years ago.  It’s been a great honor for me to get to know the ladies that put this all together and have the opportunity to work with them – first doing raffle pieces, then designing some lettering for apparel, and ultimately even painting their bikes and helmets!
