Babes Ride Out

Meet Autumn Harrison and her Triumph Street Twin

PeopleAnya Violet

We met Autumn at Babes Ride Out East Coast 2 this year. She shared her story of coming to BRO EC 1 last year on her 1972 Honda 350 and upgrading this year to a brand new 2017 Triumph Street Twin! Read on to hear more about  her and how, after riding from Washington DC to Narrowsburg, NY, she realized she had made the perfect bike choice.

How long have you been riding motorcycles?

I’ve been riding for 3 years.

Why do you ride?

The short answer is because someone told me that I couldn’t. And even if I could, I shouldn't because I am the mother of young girls. To my mind, that seemed like the best reason in the world to pursue the challenge. I wanted to be proof that a life well lived was one that didn’t avoid the things that scare us.

Run us through the list of bikes you have had in your past.

I learned to ride on a 1972 Honda 350 four that I bought off eBay three months before I took the riders course. I loved her and thought I would have time to wrench but the reality is that when I have do have time, I want to ride. So I bought a brand spanking new 2017 Triumph Street Twin.

What first attracted you to the new Triumph Street Twin?

The first thing that caught my eye was that the bike has such lovely classic lines. The thing I loved most about my vintage bike was the riding stance. The Street Twin has a very similar upright stance and as an average stature woman it was reassuring to be able to flat foot it at stops.

How did you know it was the bike for you?

I rode everything. I begged rides from friends and sat on all the bikes I could. When I got serious about buying something new I went to the dealership and rode every model. I rode a bunch  of other makes as well. But the Street Twin was by and far the best fit and most comfortable ride.

Tell us what it is like to ride?

Riding a motorcycle is the closest thing I have felt to flying. I crave the singular focus that riding demands. When I’m riding I can’t do anything except ride. As a mother with a career, I feel I'm often doing two things simultaneously and that's not possible on the back of a motorcycle. I love that my senses are completely engaged by feel of the wind, the smell of magnolias in bloom, the growl of the engine.

What made you choose the Street Twin over the other Triumph Models?

Riding stance and maneuverability. The Street Twin was very comfortable and felt easy to turn and corner.

What has been you favorite adventure you have taken on your new Street Twin?

It was so much fun coming back to Babes Ride Out on my new bike. I made the trip from Washington DC last year on my vintage Honda and I felt outmatched engine wise on the roads. The ride was much more enjoyable this year.

Do you have any fun road trips planned?

I've organized my local women's riding group to be in our local Fourth of July parade and my daughters are going to ride with me, does that count? I’m thinking about riding down to New Orleans, my home town, for Halloween this year. But I really want to celebrate my 50th birthday in two years by riding out to BRO in Joshua Tree.

Tell us about your experience at Babes Ride Out East Coast II?

I have had two great weekends at Babes Ride Out. The camaraderie I’ve felt with other women, is fantastic. These are all women who took that challenge to ride and keep riding. Its like we all share the secret of a short cut to happiness.
